Earth Hour is happening this Saturday at 8PM. What started as a citywide event in Sydney, Australia, is now a worldwide event. Last year, the residents of Syndey turned their lights off for an hour at 8PM to demonstrate solidarity toward the growing environmental problem of climate change.

My town has signed on for it and the beach town down the road is having an Earth Hour Bonfire - now that seems like a much better time than sitting home and watching the boobtube.

Check out this video, narrated by Jeremy Piven, and visit Earth Hour

In NJ, there are a couple towns sponsoring Earth Hour - Bradley Beach, Red Bank, Asbury Park and Belmar. I’m proud to say they are all in Monmouth County - the coolest NJ county there is.

We ended up in Times Square during Earth Hour thinking there would be something significant. Only the Coca-Cola sign got turned off - and to no fanfare. There were still thousands of pushy tourists and gaudy lights. Maybe next year…

San Francisco was one of the “lead cities” participating in the event…apparently, it’s a bit of an effort to even turn off the lights on the Bay Bridge…good on CalTrans for supporting the effort. I’m trying to find some pictures of before/after…post up if you see something interesting!
