Air Filter

These air filters by Mathieu Lehanneur has been making their rounds in green media like Good Magazine for their clever design. In Lehanneur’s design, a plant is enclosed in pyrex and aluminum. Through the use of a filter, ‘dirty’ air is brought into the system and then purified air is exhaled. I can’t tell if I like the concept or hate it.

Like It: If it is effective, then it will essentially be a sustainable air filter. As long as the plant inside is kept alive, there is nothing to plug in and no expensive filters to replace.

Hate It: It seems like a waste of materials which kind of makes it seem more “green hype” than “green hope” to me. My friend has tons of plants in his apartment. I’m sure they do more to filter the air than this tiny plant enclosed in a biodome.

Now it’s only a concept and a beautifully designed one at that but unless it can present some substantial data proving it’s effectiveness, I say open your windows and save your money.

bamboo

The results are in and the epicureans have spoken. Bamboo cutting boards are not only less expensive than wood and in my opinion better looking, they are made with grass (bamboo), not trees. These cutting boards, from Bambu, are made with 100% certified organically grown bamboo and handmade by artisans getting paid a fair wage. So in terms of loving your knives, fingers, and planet, I’d say:

bamboo > wood > plastic >>>>> marble, glass, ceramic

The Los Angeles Times recently reported on new tests of 100 “natural” and “organic” soaps only to find 47 of them to contain a known carcinogen, 1,4-dioxane. This substance causes cancer in lab animals and just like cell phones, microwaves, and beer, they are slowly killing us.

It just goes to show you that you can’t be too safe. I remember hearing a commercial for diet pills, it claimed it was all natural and their sales pitch goes something like this: “it’s all natural, so you know it’s safe”. Since when did that logic make any sense? I can list tons of things that are natural but not safe. Let’s see, most mushrooms, poisonous plants, a really hungry lion, lava, great white sharks, petroleum, etc.

And there you have it, the carcinogen ,1,4-dioxane, is a byproduct of certain petrochemicals. Now I’m scratching my head, how does a byproduct of petrochemicals get in an all natural product. Oh I forgot, because petroleum comes from dinosaur remains. How can something older than Jesus not be safe???

For more information, read the LA Times article: Popular ‘green’ products test positive for toxicant.
